About Cocoa Island
Makunufushi is a narrow finolhu-type island formed from coral sand deposited along a reef edge. Such islands are common along the rims of Maldivian atolls where currents concentrate sand. Historically these islands were used intermittently by fishers rather than permanent communities. The surrounding reef slopes and lagoon waters shape the island’s environment and support coral ecosystems typical of the central Maldives.
