Olhahali lies on the northern side of Kaafu Atoll where shallow reef platforms support small coral islands. The island formed through the gradual accumulation of coral sand along the reef crest and is stabilized by vegetation. Historically islands of this scale were visited occasionally by fishing crews from nearby inhabited islands. The surrounding reef slopes and lagoon waters support marine habitats typical of central Maldivian atolls.
