Akirifushi lies on a reef platform in the northern lagoon of Kaafu Atoll. The island formed from coral sand deposition along the reef crest and supports dense vegetation typical of established coral islands. Historically such islands were visited intermittently by fishing crews from nearby inhabited islands. The surrounding reef slopes and lagoon waters support coral communities typical of the central Maldives.
