About Finolhu Baa Atoll Maldives
Kanufushi is a long, narrow sand island typical of the “finolhu” formations found along Maldivian reef rims. These islands develop where currents deposit coral sand along shallow reef edges. Historically they were valued for coconuts but rarely sustained permanent communities. The island’s elongated sandbank reflects ongoing movement of sand along the reef crest. Surrounding waters remain part of the Baa Atoll reef system.
