Magudhdhuvaa lies within the lagoon of Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll where shallow reef platforms host scattered coral islands. The island formed through accumulation of coral sand over the reef base and is stabilized by dense coastal vegetation. Historically such islands were visited intermittently by fishers and coconut gatherers rather than permanent residents. The surrounding lagoon and reef slopes sustain coral communities typical of the southern atolls.
