Rannalhi lies near the southern edge of Kaafu Atoll where reef flats transition toward deeper channels. The island formed through the gradual accumulation of coral sand on a reef base. Historically small islands such as this were rarely permanent settlements but were used occasionally by nearby communities for fishing and coconuts. The surrounding reef slopes and lagoon waters remain the island’s defining natural features and support coral communities typical of the central Maldives.
