Bandos lies on the eastern side of Kaafu Atoll not far from Malé. The island developed through coral sand accumulation over a reef platform and supports dense vegetation typical of larger coral islands. Historically islands in this area were frequently visited by fishers due to their proximity to inhabited islands. The surrounding reef slopes and lagoon waters remain important habitats for coral growth and reef fish in the central Maldives.
