About Giraavaru

Giraavaru is a small island in Malé Atoll, historically inhabited by the Giraavaru people, one of the earliest recorded communities in the central Maldives. In 1968, its residents were relocated to Malé following plans for nearby tourism development. The island lies on the southeastern edge of North Malé Atoll and is surrounded by a shallow lagoon and coral reef system typical of inner atoll rims. Vegetation includes coconut palms and coastal shrubs adapted to sandy soils. Giraavaru is referenced in oral histories and early accounts as part of early settlement patterns in the Maldives.
