Mangrove in H A. Baarah
H A. Baarah boasts one of the Maldives’ most extensive mangrove wetlands, covering approximately 39 ha across ten separate areas on the island's eastern side. Its protected status since December 30, 2018, preserves six mangrove species—especially Kan’doo, Ran’doo, and Ceriops tagal—providing key habitat for birds like the rare Common Greenshank and nurseries for turtles, rays, fish, and sharks. This forest-studded wetland buffers coastlines against storms, supports freshwater retention, and captures carbon. However, it faces pressures from logging, waste disposal, and rising saltwater from climate impacts. Conservationists recommend targeted restoration, stricter coastal management, and community-led monitoring to safeguard this vital ecosystem
