About Dhigurah
Dhigurah is one of the longest inhabited islands in the Maldives, stretching over 3 km in length but averaging only 300 meters in width. The land area is around 1.3 km² with a population close to 600. Its defining feature is the extended sandbank and adjoining reef flat, which support unique reef-to-shore ecosystems. Dhigurah's lagoon hosts seagrass meadows that serve as habitats for sea turtles and juvenile fish. Traditional fishing and small-scale farming of fruits and vegetables support the local economy. The village is concentrated at the northern tip, allowing the rest of the island to remain mostly vegetated. Coastal vegetation includes ironwood, sea lettuce, and screw pine. Infrastructure includes a health center, mosque, school, and harbour. The fringing reef supports commercial reef fishing and is known locally for species such as emperor fish and wrasse.
