About Berinmadhoo
Berinmadhoo was an inhabited island in Haa Alif Atoll, geographically part of the Ihavandhippolhu Atoll in the Maldives. The island's residents were relocated to Hoarafushi under a population consolidation program initiated during President Ibrahim Nasir's administration. Initially, islanders were moved to Dhidhdhoo, but due to the limited land area and dissatisfaction, many dispersed to other atolls. Despite later attempts to return, government restrictions on land access led to further migration, with many moving to Malé. Eventually, relocation to Hoarafushi was completed, especially after the Asian tsunami, during which the government reportedly misled the Red Crescent for aid.
Berinmadhoo was known for its strict anti-smoking policy, imposing hefty fines on offenders. In September 2007, the Maldivian government proposed developing Berinmadhoo and Hathifushi as tourist resorts, part of a broader plan to expand tourism into the northern atolls. Berinmadhoo was set to become one of the first northern resort islands, with construction scheduled for completion by December 2011.
