About Dharavandhoo

The only island in the atoll with an operational domestic airport, Daravandhoo is a central transport hub with direct access to Baa’s most famous dive sites. It covers 22.5 hectares and has a population of about 1,100, making it one of the most populous islands in North Maalhosmadulu. Just 2.7 km from Hanifaru Bay, Daravandhoo lies within the heart of the Biosphere Reserve. Its coral reef supports over 350 species, including manta rays, reef sharks, and nudibranchs. Though it lacks mangrove systems, it benefits from well-maintained seagrass meadows and wide beaches fringed by coconut trees. Tourism is thriving with over 10 guesthouses, dive schools, and guided marine tours. Facilities include a hospital, school, mosque, and utility services. Balancing tourism, fishing, and sustainability, Daravandhoo is a regional leader in eco-tourism, offering both infrastructure and intimate access to some of the Maldives’ most vibrant underwater environments.

The Wreck Of "CORBIN"

Documented

Marine Protected Area (MPA)

The Corbin wreck site, located near Goidhoo Atoll southwest of Dharavandhoo, is a designated marine protected area due to its rich historical and ecological value. The French galleon Corbin sank in 1602 after running aground on a reef, and its remnants now rest in shallow waters. The site preserves coral-encrusted anchors and cannon, offering insight into early European navigation in the Indian Ocean. Surrounded by vibrant reefs and seagrass beds, the area supports diverse marine life, including turtles and reef fish. Its shallow, sheltered geography makes it ideal for eco-conscious divers and snorkelers exploring both history and marine biodiversity.
