About Kamadhoo

Home to over 280 species of reef life, Kamadhoo boasts one of the most biologically diverse coral reef zones in its sector of Baa Atoll. The island measures 21.35 hectares and supports approximately 343 residents. It has registered population of 557 people. Located on the eastern edge of the atoll, Kamadhoo is nestled in a calm lagoon and lies just 5.4 km from Hanifaru Bay. The reef system includes sea fans, parrotfish, and blacktip reef sharks. While lacking mangroves, Kamadhoo features soft sandy shores, extensive coconut groves, and shaded village paths. Fishing is a major livelihood, but eco-tourism has expanded in recent years, with 9 guesthouses offering nature-based experiences. The island has a school, mosque, and health post, and it actively promotes sustainability through coral gardening and beach clean-up programs. Kamadhoo’s youth-led conservation movement and environmental awareness have positioned it as a model for balancing traditional island life with biodiversity preservation.
