About Kendhoo
Known as one of the first islands in the Maldives to embrace Islam, Kendhoo was visited in the 12th century by Abdul Barakaath Yoosuf Al Barbary, whose legacy remains in ancient mosque ruins and coral-stone architecture. The island spans 19.02 hectares and houses around 861 residents, making it one of the larger islands in Baa Atoll. It has registered population of 1,366 people. Sheltered by a lagoon and coral flats extending over 1.9 km², Kendhoo’s reef systems support reef fish, octopuses, and lobsters. Coconut palms, breadfruit trees, and banana groves make up a productive agricultural interior. The island lacks mangroves but features historic wells and communal water systems. Fishing is central to livelihoods, with supplemental income from nearby resorts. Public infrastructure includes a school, health center, and mosque. Kendhoo blends historical depth with ecological productivity, making it a culturally rich and self-sustaining community within the atoll’s dynamic landscape.
