About Hangnameedhoo

Hangnameedhoo is located on the eastern edge of South Ari Atoll, adjacent to a channel that brings nutrient-rich currents supporting abundant marine life. With a land area of around 0.38 km² and a population of approximately 500, the island benefits from nearby coral thilas and reef systems that sustain fishing and bait collection. Dense vegetation, dominated by coconut palms and sea lettuce, forms a natural barrier against erosion. The economy is centred on fishing, with pole-and-line tuna and reef fish being primary catches. Infrastructure includes a mosque, health centre, and school. Hangnameedhoo's surrounding reef areas are known locally for large pelagic fish presence due to the strong currents through adjacent channels. The natural harbour allows safe mooring for small vessels and Dhonis. Coastal conservation efforts, including mangrove planting, are occasionally undertaken to enhance the island's resilience against environmental changes.
