About Kun'burudhoo

Kun'burudhoo is one of the least populated islands in South Ari Atoll, with under 150 residents and a land area of approximately 0.29 km². Its remoteness and low population density have allowed the island's natural vegetation and reef systems to remain relatively undisturbed. The surrounding coral reefs include areas of high live coral cover, providing habitat for reef fish and invertebrates. Fishing, particularly handline and reef fishing, is the mainstay of the local economy. Native flora includes sea hibiscus, coconut, and beach morning glory, offering some natural protection to the coastline. Community infrastructure is basic but functional, including a mosque and a small school. The island also features a protected shallow lagoon used for fishing and small-scale mooring. Kun'burudhoo's ecological features are valued within the atoll for their biodiversity and habitat continuity with neighbouring reef systems.
