About Dhihdhoo
Dhihdhoo is a compact island spanning about 0.36 km² with a resident population of around 500. It is characterised by a narrow coastal ridge and shallow lagoon that provides a natural mooring area. The reef supports reef fishing, and baitfish collection plays an important economic role. Vegetation includes dense undergrowth, pandanus, and coconut palms. The island's economy revolves around handline fishing and limited agriculture. Community infrastructure consists of a mosque, primary school, and health post. The surrounding reef zone includes coral patches and sandy beds, used by fishers to trap or net reef species. Coastal erosion is managed using traditional methods including coral boulders and vegetative buffers. Dhihdhoo’s location within the central part of the atoll makes it ecologically linked with surrounding marine areas that are important for juvenile fish habitats.
