About Fenfushi

Fenfushi is culturally significant for hosting one of the oldest coral-stone mosques in the atoll, featuring traditional craftsmanship and lacquered woodwork. The island spans around 0.41 km² and supports a population of about 400. Natural vegetation includes coconut palms, sea lettuce, and ironwood trees. The surrounding reef system supports traditional handline fishing and bait collection. The coral mosque and adjacent cemetery contain historically important carvings and tombstones dating back several centuries. Infrastructure includes a school, mosque, and health post. Fenfushi’s lagoon provides a safe mooring area and supports reef-associated biodiversity. Coastal areas are lined with dense vegetation that acts as a barrier against erosion. Waste is locally managed, and coral rubble has traditionally been used for minor shoreline reinforcement. Fenfushi holds local importance as a site of cultural heritage and ecological continuity.
