About Agolhitheemu

An’golhitheemu is among the smallest inhabited islands in Raa Atoll, with a land area of about 39.84ha and a population of 342 (2023 estimate). The island has a shallow lagoon, fringing reef, and coastline suited for pole-and-line fishing, which is the dominant occupation. Vegetation includes dense coconut groves, tropical fruit trees, and screw pines used for mat weaving and firewood. The island lacks a natural harbor but supports small vessels used for daily fishing operations. Infrastructure includes a primary school, mosque, health post, and council office. Agricultural activity is limited but includes taro cultivation in low-lying zones. Surrounding reef flats support bait fishing and small-scale seaweed collection. An’golhitheemu has minimal reclaimed land and no commercial developments. The island remains isolated, with supply and administrative links maintained through regional transport to Ungoofaaru and Alifushi. Seasonal weather patterns influence fishing activity and inter-island access.
