About Alifushi

Alifushi is one of the Maldives’ primary centers for traditional boatbuilding, with over 200 active carpenters crafting vessels such as dhonis and masdhonis. Located on a detached reef platform without a surrounding lagoon, the island is geographically distinct within Raa Atoll. Alifushi has a land area of approximately 60.57Ha and a registered population of 2,932 residents. The coastline includes sandy stretches and rocky edges used for fish drying and boat construction. Fishing remains the main economic activity alongside carpentry. Vegetation is minimal, with coconut palms and salt-tolerant species planted around residences. Public infrastructure includes a health center, three schools, and council offices. The harbor accommodates small vessels used for fishing and inter-island trade. Despite its small size, Alifushi’s concentrated skill base in maritime craft supports vessel demand across the country, making it a major contributor to the national fishing sector.
