About Hulhudhuffaaru

Hulhudhuffaaru is one of the youngest inhabited islands in the Maldives, officially settled only in 1995 as part of a government resettlement programme. Despite its short history, the island has rapidly grown into a key administrative and service hub in North Maalhosmadulu Atoll (Raa Atoll). It covers around 60.82 hectares and had a registered population of 1,578 in 2023. The island features a 24-hour health center and a full primary and secondary school that serves not only local students but also those from nearby islands. Economic life is anchored in fishing, agriculture, and public sector employment, with well-laid internal roads supporting easy movement. Recent investments in shoreline protection and infrastructure have made the island more resilient, including the construction of a groyne, revetment, breakwater, and beach nourishment. Hulhudhuffaaru’s planned layout, essential services, and regional importance make it a standout example of modern island development in the Maldives.
