About Maakurathu

Maakurathu, spanning approximately 53.14 hectares, is one of the most densely vegetated islands in Raa Atoll and remains notable for its thriving coconut groves and traditional taro fields. These lush landscapes not only sustain the island’s economy but also reflect a long-standing commitment to self-sufficiency and land stewardship. Located near the western fringe of the atoll, Maakurathu is surrounded by a shallow lagoon and a continuous fringing reef that supports a productive fishing sector.

With a population of around 1,368 (2023 registered), the island relies primarily on handline and pole-and-line fishing for reef fish and tuna. Carpentry, coir-rope production from coconut husk fiber, and small-scale agriculture further strengthen the local economy. The island interior features freshwater wells, banana and yam patches, and tropical fruit trees. Key public services include a school, health center, council office, and a functioning harbour that supports trade and inter-island connectivity.
