About Rasgetheemu

Rasgetheemu is traditionally regarded as the earliest royal settlement in the Maldives, with oral history naming it “Rasge Theemu,” or “Island of the King’s House.” The island spans approximately 39.21hectares and is inhabited by about 473 people. It has a registered population of 972 people. Located along the northwestern edge of Raa Atoll, Rasgetheemu is enclosed by a shallow lagoon and coral reef supporting fishing and bait collection. The coast is lined with white sand beaches and native vegetation such as coconut, breadfruit, and screw pine. Fishing remains the main economic activity, supported by reef fish and tuna stocks. Local production includes small-scale crafts, coconut products, and woodwork. Community facilities include a health center, school, mosque, and council building. Though no royal ruins remain, the island’s historical identity remains an important part of its cultural landscape. Its geography provides natural protection and consistent fishing access year-round.
