About Ungufaaru
Ungoofaaru is the administrative capital of Raa Atoll, with a registered population of 1,810 and an area of approximately 36.15hectares. It hosts the regional hospital, atoll council offices, police station, and education authority buildings. The island has a modified coastline with reclaimed land and a constructed harbor used for supply vessels, fishing boats, and regional ferries. Fishing remains active, though commercial and service sectors also form a significant part of the economy. Vegetation is mostly cultivated, including coconut palms and ornamental trees. Public services include a secondary school, health center, court house, and utility stations. The island’s harbor supports nearly 80 vessels, including both private and government craft. While densely developed, Ungoofaaru maintains basic access to reef-based resources. It also serves as the primary logistics and administrative point for more than 10 nearby inhabited islands, making it a regional center for governance and public service.
