About Bodufolhudhoo

Located within the core area of the North Ari Biosphere Reserve, Bodufolhudhoo is one of the smallest inhabited islands actively supporting conservation-focused livelihoods. Covering just 0.57 km², it is home to approximately 400 residents. The island is surrounded by vibrant coral reefs, home to key species such as parrotfish and sea cucumbers. Traditional pole-and-line tuna fishing remains central to the economy. Public services include a health centre, mosque, school, and community waste facility. The reef system also provides natural protection from coastal erosion, and the island’s lagoon serves as a breeding ground for reef fish. Coconut palms and local tropical plants dominate the landscape. Though small in size, Bodufolhudhoo demonstrates effective land use, hosting both residential and communal infrastructure within its limited area. The island has implemented basic environmental management systems to regulate solid waste and greywater disposal, in alignment with its location within an ecologically sensitive marine area.
