Goidhoo Koaru

Protected & Documented

Adjacent to Goidhoo Island, Goidhoo Koaru is a rare protected mangrove and wetland system within the Maldives. The area contains extensive stands of Rhizophora mucronata and Bruguiera cylindrica, and supports estuarine species including mudskippers, mangrove crabs, and juvenile reef fish. It plays a critical ecological role in carbon sequestration, sediment capture, and as a nursery ground. The site offers a baseline for long-term mangrove monitoring and wetland health assessments.
