About Feridhoo

Feridhoo stands out for its enclosing reef that forms a natural lagoon, protecting the island and supporting rich biodiversity. Measuring approximately 0.56 km², it has a resident population of around 300. The island’s oval shape provides a distinct internal geography, with dense vegetation dominated by coconut palms, breadfruit trees, and screw pines. Fishing, especially for tuna and reef fish, is the primary source of livelihood. The reef encircling the island includes diverse coral formations, acting as a natural barrier and supporting sustainable fisheries. Community infrastructure consists of a mosque, a health post, and a primary school. Feridhoo’s coastal ecosystem also includes shallow sandy flats and a fringing reef, which contribute to its biological productivity. A modest harbour supports small boats used for daily fishing and inter-island transport. While limited in landmass, Feridhoo maintains essential services and continues to rely on marine and plant resources to support its isolated but self-sustaining population.
