About Himandhoo

Himandhoo is distinguished by its naturally deep harbour, which enables a relatively large fishing fleet despite a modest land area of about 1.05 km². The population stands at approximately 600. The harbour’s depth permits vessels to anchor safely during rough weather, making it an important point for tuna and reef fishing activities. The island's economy is anchored in traditional pole-and-line fishing as well as handline methods used to catch grouper and snapper. Local agriculture includes cultivation of bananas, coconuts, and papayas. The built environment includes a mosque, a school, and a health centre. The surrounding reef system provides significant habitat diversity, supporting commercial and subsistence fishing. Coastal vegetation helps prevent erosion, and dense groves of native trees and shrubs are found throughout the interior. Himandhoo’s marine topography gives it strategic importance among inhabited islands in the atoll, particularly for navigation, fishing, and storm-safe anchorage.
