About Thoddoo

Thoddoo is the primary agricultural island in Alif Alif Atoll, supplying a large share of the nation’s papayas and watermelons. The island covers about 1.6 km² and has a population exceeding 2,000. Fertile soil, shallow freshwater lens, and extensive cultivated land make Thoddoo unique among coral islands. Agricultural products include papaya, watermelon, banana, coconut, betel leaf, and chillies, most of which are transported to Malé and other atolls. Fishing remains active, particularly for skipjack tuna and reef fish. The island is equipped with a health centre, school, mosque, and agricultural support infrastructure, including warehouses and irrigation wells. A broad internal road network connects farming plots and residential areas. Coastal vegetation includes dense coconut groves and pandanus trees, while the outer reef system helps to stabilise the shoreline. Thoddoo’s diversified economy and agricultural scale make it a key contributor to national food supply and a standout in the central atolls.
