About Omadhoo

Omadhoo is noted for its proximity to the Ariadhoo channel, a deep-water pass that enhances local biodiversity and provides ideal conditions for bait fishing. The island covers roughly 0.46 km² and is home to about 800 residents. Omadhoo’s environment includes a lagoon with seagrass beds and a fringing reef supporting reef fish and crustaceans. Fishing remains central to the economy, particularly pole-and-line tuna fishing. Native vegetation includes screw pine, hibiscus, and coconut palms. The island’s facilities include a school, mosque, and health post. The reef system nearby supports a variety of fish species, which are used both for subsistence and commercial trade. The harbour provides year-round anchorage for small boats. Waste management is handled locally, with waste segregation practiced at household level. Omadhoo's geographic positioning makes it an important fishing ground for baitfish and reef-associated species.
