About Mahibadhoo

Mahibadhoo is the administrative capital of South Ari Atoll, with a land area of about 0.63 km² and a population nearing 2,000. It houses the atoll council, police station, court, and regional hospital. The economy is led by tuna fishing, especially skipjack and yellowfin, supported by a large mechanized fishing fleet. The harbour accommodates fishing and cargo vessels, while adjacent reefs are used for baitfish collection. Mahibadhoo also maintains an agricultural zone where fruits and vegetables are cultivated. Vegetation includes coastal palm groves and managed green spaces. The built environment includes paved streets, waste segregation centers, educational institutions, and government buildings. The island has historically played a leadership role in marine and coastal resource management within the atoll, with initiatives such as reef monitoring and coastal erosion control. Mahibadhoo’s comprehensive infrastructure and governance functions position it as a regional center of administration and economic activity.
