About Rakeedhoo
Rakeedhoo is one of the smallest inhabited islands in Vaavu Atoll by population, with fewer than 150 residents and a land area of 6.42 hectares. The island is located on the southern fringe of the atoll and is known for its reliance on fishing, particularly for bait species used in tuna pole-and-line fisheries. Historical accounts suggest it has been inhabited since the early 20th century, following periodic use as a fishing outpost. The island contains a health post, mosque, and a school offering primary education. Water is sourced primarily through rainwater harvesting systems, with backup desalinated water during dry seasons. Rakeedhoo’s lagoon and reef areas are productive and essential to its subsistence fishing economy. Coastal vegetation includes coconut trees, sea lettuce, and beach morning glory. Due to its small population, the island is often involved in community-level resilience initiatives supported by the atoll council and national programs.
