About Felidhu Atoll
Felidhu Atoll, traditionally known as Vaavu Atoll, is the least populous natural atoll in the Maldives, with just five inhabited islands and a population of under 2,000. It is best known for Miyaru Kandu (“Shark Channel”), a deep channel famous for its strong currents and frequent grey reef shark sightings. Another striking site is Bodumohoraa, an uninhabited island surrounded by rich coral systems and visited for snorkeling and fishing.
The atoll consists of 21 islands in total, many of which remain untouched or sparsely developed. Residents rely heavily on fishing and boat building, with islands like Felidhoo and Keyodhoo maintaining active harbours. The eastern rim of Vaavu is particularly exposed to the open ocean, creating dynamic reef conditions that attract marine researchers and divers. Despite limited infrastructure, the atoll remains a significant contributor to reef health data through community-led ocean observations.
