About Keyodhoo

Keyodhoo is the most populous island in Vaavu Atoll, with an estimated population of over 520 residents and a land area of approximately 11.82 hectares. Historically, the island was established as a permanent settlement in the early 20th century to support the growing demand for fishing and bait collection. Today, it operates a harbour that supports both traditional and mechanized fishing vessels. Keyodhoo is equipped with a health centre, a secondary school, and a local council office. Freshwater is supplied through household rainwater tanks, and a desalination plant installed in recent years improves supply reliability. The island’s surrounding reefs provide bait species such as silver sprats, essential for tuna fishing operations. Keyodhoo also supports small-scale tourism, with a few guesthouses targeting diving visitors. Vegetation includes coconut palms and tropical almond trees. Its economic and demographic size makes Keyodhoo a major commercial and service center within the atoll.
