About Felidhoo

Felidhoo serves as the administrative capital of Vaavu Atoll and is home to key government offices and public services. It spans approximately 0.31 km² and supports a population of around 503. Historical records indicate the island’s continuous habitation since at least the 18th century, with oral histories referencing traditional shipbuilding and trade. Today, Felidhoo hosts the atoll’s main health centre, a school providing secondary education, and a magistrate court. The island’s harbour accommodates ferries and cargo vessels connecting to Malé and nearby islands. Rainwater harvesting is the primary source of freshwater, supplemented by a small-scale reverse osmosis desalination unit. Felidhoo’s reef flat and lagoon area support bait fishing and reef fishing, particularly for scads and fusiliers. Vegetation includes coconut palms, breadfruit trees, and coastal shrubs. As the administrative center, Felidhoo plays a key role in managing regional development, emergency response coordination, and public service delivery across Vaavu Atoll.
