About Thinadhoo

Thinadhoo has gained recognition in recent years for its eco-tourism initiatives, with guesthouses promoting reef-friendly diving and waste reduction practices. Covering a land area of 12.49ha, it has a population of 74. Originally a seasonal fishing stop, Thinadhoo became permanently settled in the mid-20th century. The island supports reef-based tourism, with dive spots located less than 15 minutes offshore, including notable coral thilas and manta cleaning stations. Basic infrastructure includes a mosque, school, health post, and guest jetty. Water is collected via rainwater systems and supplemented by limited desalination. Coral rubble is used for pathway construction and shoreline protection. Vegetation includes palm species, sea grapes, and small-scale cultivated crops such as papaya. Thinadhoo’s approach to low-impact tourism and marine conservation makes it a model for sustainable development in Vaavu Atoll.
