About Meedhoo

Meedhoo, one of the oldest inhabited islands in Addu Atoll, is renowned for being the first island in the Maldives to embrace Islam, according to local tradition. Located in southern Addu City and joined to Hulhudhoo by a causeway, Meedhoo has a population of over 3,000 residents and spans around 1.2 square kilometers.
Historically, Meedhoo is home to one of the country’s oldest mosques, Fenfushi Miskiy, and a number of historic cemeteries. The island is known for producing scholars and clerics, earning it a reputation as a religious center in the southern Maldives. Its local dialect is unique to the region and distinct from northern Dhivehi.
Economically, Meedhoo relies on agriculture, fishing, civil service, and employment in the tourism industry. Despite its modest size, it holds significant cultural and historical value, and its identity remains shaped by centuries of religious and educational traditions.
