About Hulhudhoo

Hulhudhoo, part of southern Addu City, is located in the southernmost atoll of the Maldives. It is connected to the neighboring island of Meedhoo by a land. Together, the two islands form one of the oldest continuously inhabited regions in the Maldives. Hulhudhoo alone has a registered population of over 3,685 people and covers an area of approximately 1.6 square kilometers.
Historically, Hulhudhoo was part of the Suvadive Republic and contributed significantly to southern independence sentiments during the secession movement in the late 1950s. The island’s economy traditionally relied on agriculture, fishing, and more recently, employment in resorts and government services.
The island has preserved centuries-old Islamic sites, including mosques and tombs, reflecting its long-standing religious and cultural heritage. Hulhudhoo’s dialect is distinct and is shared with nearby Meedhoo, forming a unique linguistic identity within the southern Maldives.
