About Hithadhoo
Hithadhoo stands as one of the most prominent islands in the Maldives, both in size and population. Spanning 5.2 square kilometers, it is among the largest natural islands in the country and forms the administrative heart of Addu City. With over 16,500 people registered and a resident population of 13,759 (2022 census), it is the second most populous island in the nation. Hithadhoo has long played a vital role in national affairs, notably during the Suvadive secession movement (1959–1963), when southern atolls sought independence. The island continues to serve as a key hub for the southern Maldives, hosting branches of the Maldives National University and major health and government offices. Connected by a 14-kilometre causeway network to neighbouring islands, Hithadhoo also supports the country’s longest road system. Its mangroves and wetlands, like Koattey, are ecologically rich, while historic mosques and centuries-old cemeteries reflect a deep cultural legacy unique to the south.
