According to the 2022 Census, Fainu had a resident population of 386, while the 2024 Statistical Yearbook records 497 registered residents, reflecting a common pattern in the Maldives where not all registered individuals live on the island. This difference also highlights limited migration and a relatively stable population. Fishing, especially reef and small-scale lagoon fishing, remains a key livelihood, supported by the island’s calm, shallow waters. Fainu is also known for traditional carpentry and boatbuilding, with skills passed down through generations.
