About Kinolhas
Kinolhas is one of the largest inhabited islands in Raa Atoll, covering approximately 56.23 hectares and located about 150 km north of Malé. Historically significant, the island was ruled in the 14th century by Abd al-Aziz of Mogadishu and was twice visited by the renowned traveler Ibn Battuta, who noted its tall trees and welcoming community. Today, Kinolhas remains lush and green, with abundant coconut palms, breadfruit, mango trees, and patches of mangrove that protect its shoreline and enrich the landscape.
The island supports a strong fishing economy, particularly pole-and-line tuna and reef fishing, along with traditional coir-rope making and small-scale boatbuilding. Its natural harbour has been recently upgraded to support local trade and travel. Home to around 672 registered residents, Kinolhas is equipped with a health center, school, council office, utility services, and safe harbour infrastructure
