About Vaadhoo

Bioluminescence caused by Noctiluca scintillans has been occasionally documented along Vaadhoo’s beach, a rare natural phenomenon in the Maldives. The island has a registered population of 1,810 people (2023 ) and covers an area of roughly 38.17hectares. It is surrounded by a fringing reef system with a narrow but functional lagoon, used for small-boat anchorage and reef fishing. Vaadhoo’s interior supports thick vegetation including coconut palms, breadfruit, and tropical hardwoods. Fishing is the primary occupation, mainly conducted using pole-and-line and handline techniques. Local infrastructure includes a mosque, school, health post, and council office. The reef zone supports bait fishing and limited sea cucumber harvesting. There are no guesthouses or registered tourism facilities. Vaadhoo’s ecological balance and minimal land reclamation make it representative of less-developed but environmentally stable islands in the atoll. It is administratively linked through the northern regional governance structure based in Ungufaaru.
