About Kurendhoo
Kurendhoo is notable for its wide lagoon and extensive shallow reef, which support traditional pole-and-line fishing and bait collection. The island spans approximately 22.79ha and had a registered population of 2,063 in 2023. Its reef flat is among the broadest in the atoll, making it a key site for reef gleaning and marine resource use. Coconut palms, screw pines, and breadfruit trees dominate the island’s vegetation. Kurendhoo’s economy revolves around fishing, agriculture, and small-scale carpentry. The island supports a school, health center, mosque, and administrative offices. Its harbor accommodates local boats, including dhonis used for tuna fishing and reef fish harvesting. Public utilities such as electricity and water supply are locally managed. Limited taro and papaya cultivation occurs in interior plots. Kurendhoo’s flat terrain and surrounding lagoon make it ecologically productive and integral to local fisheries in Lhaviyani Atoll.
