About Faadhippolhu

Faadhipolhu is known for its thriving reef fisheries and longstanding connection to Maldivian seafaring culture. Its reefs support rich stocks of yellowfin tuna and reef fish, making it one of the most productive fishing areas in the country. The atoll includes 52 islands, some historically inhabited, with evidence of old mosques and burial grounds pointing to early settlement and local tradition. Faadhipolhu’s reef structure is distinct—unlike other atolls, it lacks a single enclosed lagoon, and instead features numerous farus and channels with strong ocean flow. This has helped sustain high coral diversity and vibrant marine life. Several of its islands and surrounding waters are designated as marine protected areas, including important dive sites and sandbanks. Today, the atoll includes a mix of inhabited islands, tourist resorts, and uninhabited islands. It is administratively referred to as Lhaviyani Atoll, based on the code used in the Maldivian alphabetical system.
