About Olhuvelifushi

Olhuvelifushi is one of the least populated inhabited islands in Lhaviyani Atoll, with a total registered population of just 787 (2023). Despite its small community, the island is known for its broad reef platform and sheltered lagoon, used for reef fishing and bait collection. It covers a land area of approximately 0.28 km² and retains much of its original vegetation, including coconut palms, screw pines, and pandanus. Fishing remains the primary occupation, supported by small-scale farming of banana, taro, and sweet potato. Infrastructure includes a school, mosque, health post, and council office. A small harbor accommodates traditional boats and is used for inter-island transport. The island's shallow reef flats support bait fishing and reef gleaning. Freshwater wells and rainwater harvesting systems are used for daily needs. Olhuvelifushi remains ecologically intact and plays a role in supporting traditional marine practices within the atoll.
