About Guraidhoo

Guraidhoo is notable for its connection to a separate, uninhabited islet via a manmade causeway—an unusual feature in the Maldives. The main island spans 0.35 km² and hosts a population of 2,065 (2023). Its reef system includes a semi-enclosed lagoon used for anchorage, and the southern reef edge is a traditional bait fishing site. Guraidhoo’s vegetation includes coconut palms, screw pines, and cultivated banana and taro. The causeway links it to Kaafu Dhekunu Thilafalhu, allowing limited farming and recreation. The economy centers on fishing, retail, and public services. Infrastructure includes a school, mosque, health center, and harbor. The island has also historically functioned as a center for judicial administration in the region. Its reef flat and shallow lagoon support artisanal fisheries and maintain high marine biodiversity. The unique inter-island linkage via land route distinguishes Guraidhoo geographically within Kaafu Atoll.

Documented

Marine Protected Area (MPA)

Guraidhoo Kanduolhi is a channel between Guraidhoo and Maafushi islands in South Malé Atoll. This 351-hectare site includes deep channels and coral-rich walls that support large pelagic species and reef dwellers. It is part of a well-known current-swept passage used by divers and also acts as a migratory path for marine species. Coral cover is dense in certain areas, particularly near drop-offs. The site is often used in dive itineraries and is one of the earliest declared marine protected areas in the Maldives.
