About Male' Atoll
Malé Atoll, comprising North and South Malé Atolls, is geologically distinct for its well-defined ring-like structure and numerous deep channels that cut through the atoll rim. These channels, such as Vaadhoo Kandu and Guraidhoo Kandu, are known for their strong currents and rich marine biodiversity, making the atoll one of the Maldives' premier diving regions. The atoll contains dozens of inhabited and uninhabited islands, sandbanks, and protected marine areas, including Banana Reef — one of the first dive sites discovered in the country. Coral reefs within the atoll support vibrant ecosystems with manta rays, reef sharks, and diverse coral species. Historically, the islands in Malé Atoll have been continuously settled due to their central location, with traditional livelihoods like fishing and coconut cultivation shaping the local culture. Despite growing development, several islands maintain natural coastal vegetation and important reef habitats that contribute to the Maldives’ broader ecological network.
