About Gulhi

Gulhi is known for its unusually wide beach ridge and its historical involvement in boatbuilding and carpentry. The island covers 0.12 km² and had a population of 837 in 2023. Located on the eastern edge of South Malé Atoll, Gulhi's shallow lagoon and adjacent reef provide an ideal setting for nearshore fishing. Coconut palms and native trees line the coastline, while the interior is partially developed for housing and public use. Economic activities include fishing, carpentry, and small-scale agriculture. Gulhi features a functional harbor, school, mosque, and health post. Boatbuilding continues in specialized yards along the southern beach, with traditional dhonis and small vessels crafted for inter-island travel. Rainwater harvesting remains the primary freshwater source. The island's reef flat and seagrass areas support juvenile fish populations, contributing to ecological balance. Despite its size, Gulhi maintains a structured layout and remains significant for its craftsmanship and coastal resource use.
