About Maafushi

Maafushi is distinguished by housing one of the Maldives’ largest correctional facilities, which also serves as a regional employment hub. The island spans 1.27 km² and had a population of 2,380 in 2023. Located in South Malé Atoll, its western reef edge supports bait and reef fish harvesting. Fishing remains a vital part of the economy, supported by small-scale agriculture. The prison compound occupies part of the southern coast and is supported by dedicated infrastructure and utilities. The island also features a school, mosque, health center, and harbor. Vegetation includes coconut palms, screw pines, and cultivated breadfruit trees. Maafushi’s eastern shoreline includes a reef flat used for beach seining and traditional fishing. Rainwater and desalinated water systems support domestic use. Historically, Maafushi was known for producing skilled carpenters and boat repair workers. Its dual function as both a residential and institutional island sets it apart in the Atoll.
