About Gaafaru
Gaafaru is distinctive for its large oval-shaped reef platform, which spans over 10 km in diameter, one of the largest single reef systems in the Maldives. The inhabited island itself is just 0.27 km², with a population of 1196 (2022 Census. The island have a registered population of 1,1564 people. The reef supports diverse marine life, bait fishing, and has historically been significant for navigation. The island's economy relies primarily on fishing, supplemented by boatbuilding and public employment. Vegetation is dense in some parts, dominated by coconut palms and banana plants.
The island maintains a school, mosque, council building, and basic health post. Gaafaru’s isolated position on its own reef system makes it ecologically and geographically distinct. Traditional tuna fishing using live bait is actively practiced, supported by reef-edge fishing grounds.
